To have God hide his face in a time of trouble is no new or unusual thing. God's dearest saints — yes, his own Son — have experienced it. In the depths of inward and outward trouble, when wave called to wave, he did not feel those sweet and sensible influences of comfort from God that had always filled his soul before. If Christ cries in extremity, My God, my God, why have you forsaken me, then surely we need not wonder as if some strange thing had happened to us.
