The Thirteenth Article Explained

Scripture referenced in this chapter 9

First, That the holy Scripture is that rule of knowing God, and living to him, which whoever does not believe, but betakes himself to any other way of discovering truth, and the mind of God instead thereof, cannot be saved.

2 Thessalonians 2:10, 11, 12. Because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved; and for this cause God shall send them strong delusions, that they should believe a lie; that they all might be damned, who believe not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness, ver. 13. But we are bound to give thanks always to God for you, Brethren, beloved of the Lord, because God has from the beginning chosen you to salvation, through sanctification of the Spirit, and belief of the truth, ver. 14. whereunto he called you by our Gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

15. Therefore Brethren stand fast, and hold the traditions which you have been taught, whether by word, or our Epistle.

1 Corinthians 15:1, 2, 3. Moreover, Brethren, I declare to you the Gospel, which I preached to you, which also you have received, and wherein you stand.

By which also you are saved, if you keep in memory what I preached to you, unless you have believed in vain.

For I delivered to you first of all, that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins, according to the Scriptures.

2 Corinthians 1:13. For we write none other things to you than what you read, or acknowledge, and I trust you shall acknowledge even to the end, compared with Acts 26:22. &c.

Having therefore obtained help of God, I continue to this day, witnessing both to small and great, saying none other things than those which the Prophets, and Moses did say should come.

John 5:39. Search the Scriptures, for in them you think to have eternal life; compared with Psalm 147:19. & 20. verses.

He shewed his word to Jacob, his statutes and judgements to Israel, he has not dealt so with any nation; and as for his judgements they have not known them.

And with John 4:22. You worship you know not what, we know what we worship; for salvation is of the Jews.

2 Peter 2:1. But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction, compared with 2 Peter 3:1, 2. This second Epistle (beloved) I now write to you, in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance.

That you may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy Prophets, and of the commandment of us the Apostles of the Lord and Savior.
