Scripture referenced in this chapter 3

If we cannot bring forth good fruit, till we be good trees; nor become good trees, until we be grafted or united to Jesus Christ; then there can be no gracious conditions, or qualifications wrought in us, before we receive union with Christ.

But we cannot bring forth good fruit, till we become good trees; nor become trees of righteousness, until we be grafted into Jesus Christ.

Therefore there be no gracious conditions, or qualifications wrought in us, before we received union with Jesus Christ.

The proposition is clear of itself, that we cannot bring forth good fruit, until we be good trees (Matthew 7:18): a corrupt tree cannot bring forth good fruit. Nor can we become the good trees of righteousness, of the Lord's plantation (Isaiah 61:3), until we be grafted into Christ (John 15:4): as the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine, no more can you, except you abide in me. Verse 5: I am the vine, you are the branches; he that abides in me, and I in him, the same brings forth much fruit: for without me you can do nothing.
