The Doctrine of Original Sin

by Jonathan Edwards

Edwards' definitive defense of the Reformed doctrine that all humanity inherits a corrupt nature from Adam. Written as a thorough reply to Dr. John Taylor's Arminian challenge, Edwards marshals Scripture, reason, and observation to demonstrate that universal human sinfulness, mortality, and depravity cannot be explained apart from original sin. Drawing especially on Romans 5 and Genesis 1–3, he argues that Adam's guilt and corruption are justly imputed to all his posterity — indispensable to a right understanding of the gospel and the redemption accomplished by Christ.
