God's Presence with a People

by John Owen

Preached before the Parliament of England on a day of solemn humiliation in 1656, this sermon expounds 2 Chronicles 15:2 — "The Lord is with you, while you are with him." Owen distinguishes God's special providential presence from his covenant presence in Christ, arguing that a nation's prosperity depends on its leaders seeking God, trusting him for protection, and owning his people's cause. Rich with Old Testament typology and urgent political application, it remains a searching call to national accountability before God.
