Each person is appointed by God to be the guard and defender of his heart as a garrison against his enemies: if, without calling for help or waiting for relief, he surrenders the garrison to the enemy at the first siege, he commits an obvious crime of treason: what then is to be said of surrendering the keys of this garrison before it is even besieged? The key is thought, for thought opens the heart; to turn thought is to turn the key of the heart to open it, so that it may at last be unlocked. Ames, de Conscien. p. 154.
